November 27, 2024 – January 27, 2025
Chagall a Roma: La crocifissione bianca offers an intense experience of contemplation. This extraordinary work by Marc Chagall, one of the most emblematic of the 20th century, recalls, denounces, and moves in a weave of suffering and hope.
Conceived by the Dicastery for Evangelization – Section for the Fundamental Issues of Evangelization in the World, as part of the artistic events accompanying the Jubilee 2025, and organized in collaboration with the Rome Foundation, the exhibition, with free admission, connects the public with the symbolic power of The White Crucifixion, a masterpiece from the Art Institute of Chicago.
Created with Marc Chagall’s unmistakable poetic and evocative language, rich in references to history and symbols of Jewish culture, the work places the crucified Jesus at its center, emphasizing how he embodies the persecutions of his people and all the afflicted of the world. Chagall painted it immediately after the harrowing events of Kristallnacht on November 9-10, 1938, a particularly emblematic episode of anti-Jewish violence within the Nazi context and across various parts of Europe. Yet the universal value of the image goes beyond a single historical moment and the story of one people: it is a perennial cry against the madness of extremists of every era and a symbol of hope in divine salvation.
The explanatory journey allows visitors to engage deeply with a complex and fascinating work, offering a journey of art, pain, conscience, and faith within the timeless halls of Palazzo Cipolla.
