Palazzo Sciarra Colonna

Today, Palazzo Sciarra Colonna, an ancient noble palace and home to the Fondazione Roma, serves as the heart of the Museo del Corso – Polo Museale. It houses a rich permanent collection that includes works by artists such as Pietro da Cortona, Piermatteo d’Amelia, Lucio Fontana, Giacomo Balla, Mario Schifano, Mimmo Paladino, and Igor Mitoraj.

The collection spans centuries, exploring the relationship between art and the Eternal City. It includes paintings, sculptures, and tapestries connected to Rome’s history and artists who stayed there, covering a broad time period from the 15th century to the present day.

The palace also contains a prestigious and extensive coin collection, mostly comprising emissions from Roman Popes. Second only to the Vatican collection, the Museo del Corso – Polo Museale’s numismatic collection includes over 2,500 items, some unique or extremely rare, such as the exceptional gold medallion of Pope Pius IX, featuring a reverse view of the central nave of St. Peter’s Basilica.

As part of some guided tours, visitors can also access the Historical Archive of the Fondazione Roma and the architecturally significant Cardinal’s Apartments. Designed in the 18th century by Luigi Vanvitelli, the Mirror Cabinet and Cardinal Prospero Colonna’s Library are exquisite examples of rococo and rocaille style.
