From Vienna to Rome. The Wonders of the Habsburgs from the Kunsthistorisches Museum

6 March – 5 July 2026

For the first time in Italy, more than fifty masterpieces from the collections of Vienna’s Kunsthistorisches Museum tell the story of the origins, splendour, and complexity of one of Europe’s greatest cultural enterprises.

Curated by Cäcilia Bischoff, art historian at the Kunsthistorisches Museum, the exhibition brings together works collected or commissioned by the House of Habsburg, offering a portrait of a multi-ethnic, multicultural, and multi-religious empire that made art a powerful instrument of cultural representation, the dissemination of knowledge, and dialogue between civilizations. The exhibition features works by masters such as Rubens, Velázquez, Brueghel the Elder, Van Dyck, and Cranach, alongside renowned Italian artists including Caravaggio, Arcimboldo, Titian, Tintoretto, and Veronese.

The exhibition is further enriched by a precious selection of works from the Kunstkammer, one of Europe’s most extraordinary “cabinets of curiosities,” where the wonders of nature and the triumphs of human ingenuity coexist in a universe of splendour, curiosity, and contemplation.

Promoted and produced by Fondazione Roma in collaboration with the Kunsthistorisches Museum, under the patronage of the Italian Ministry of Culture and the Embassy of Austria in Rome, the exhibition is organized with the support of MondoMostre and is also made possible thanks to the contribution of the Sella Group—through Banca Sellaand Banca Patrimoni Sella & C., the exhibition’s official sponsor. Atac is the mobility partner, and Radio Dimensione Suono is the radio partner of the initiative.
