Dialogue on Carlo Maratti’s masterpiece, long lost and recently rediscovered.
On Friday, 30 January 2026 at 6:00 PM, the Museo del Corso hosts a lecture dedicated to The Portrait of Gaspare Marcaccioni by Carlo Maratti, one of the highest achievements of the artist’s portrait production and the centre of a particularly intriguing collecting history.
Long considered lost, the painting was recently acquired by Fondazione Roma and is now on display in the exhibition “Homage to Carlo Maratti”, offering the public the opportunity to rediscover a work of outstanding pictorial quality and psychological depth.
The lecture will explore the long-standing friendship between Maratti and his sitter, clearly reflected in the unusual half-length three-quarter pose and in the subtly ironic yet benevolent gaze directed at the viewer—an expression of a conscious and proud social ascent, mirroring that of the painter himself.
The event will take the form of a dialogue between Simonetta Prosperi Valenti Rodinò, curator of the exhibition, and Xavier Salomon, Director of the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum in Lisbon, who has contributed to recent studies on the work, retracing its history, critical reception, and significance.
